In celebration of this year’s Global Money Week,
Students and Staff of Roemichs International Schools, Ilorin were exposed to
the nitty-gritty of financial dealings in order to empower them with the tools
and inspiration to take charge of their future.
The Global Money Week, which was initiated by the
Child and Youth Finance International in 2012, is a money awareness celebration
with the goal to teach children and youth about money, saving, creating
livelihoods, gaining empowerment and becoming an entrepreneur through fun and
interactive activities.

Celebrated yearly during the second week of March,
the Global Money week is designed for Secondary School students, Undergraduate
and Post-graduate students who are expected to play an integral role in
advocating for greater economic education and financial inclusion for children
and youth.

Between 2012 and 2015, some 9.6 million children and
youth from over one hundred countries have participated in the Global Money
Week through planning, organizing and actualization of events marking the week
as well as in the discussions and knowledge sharing opportunities that the week
affords the participants.
This year’s theme is “Take Part. Save Smart” and
is aimed at encouraging children and youth to learn and take part in clever
cost-management habits from an early age, in order to avoid financial exclusion
while developing key money managing skills for their future endeavours.

This explains why the management of the Nigerian
Stock Exchange (NSE) Ilorin Branch, led by the Branch Manager Mrs. Adedunmola Banu,
took the Global Money Week to Roemichs International Schools Ilorin, where both
Students and Staff of the school, had the rare opportunity to share their
opinion on the financial market while they also asked questions bordering on
their finances and Nigeria financial policies.

Mrs. Banu said the reason for the workshop is to ensure
that every child and youth has access to economic education, the opportunity to
use financial services, a reliable source of income and the ability to develop
money managing skills.

“We
want to make sure that the opinions of the next generation are heard, so that
the decision makers of tomorrow may take an active part in the policy
discussions of today.”

She added that celebrating the Global Money Week is
an avenue of supporting financial education for children and youth.

The teacher in charge of Roemichs International
Schools’ Commercial Class and the Programme Coordinator, Mr. Ibikunle Odunaya,
said the programme is in line with the school’s vision which is the commitment
to quality education which guides, inspires and challenges children to attain
their highest potential in whatever they do now and in the future.

Mr. Odunaya added that the school will continue to
encourage her students to take active part in financial services, while also
getting qualitative economic education that will empower them to be job
creators.

Itunu Kayode, a senior school student of Roemichs
International Schools, Ilorin, described the programme as highly educative,
adding that it has empowered him to take charge of his finances now and in the
future.

Hikmah Olawore, a year 8 students of the Schools, said
the programme has opened her eyes to business opportunities that she can engage
in, even as a student.

For Muhammed Issa-Onilu, also a year 8 student of
Roemichs International Schools, Ilorin, the event has ignited
the habit of saving in him and thanked Roemichs and the Nigerian Stock Exchange
for giving him such a priceless exposure.
